PROGRESS on Eskom‘s anticipated Nuclear One project – which could be based on the Eastern Cape coast – is being hampered by delays in the finalisation of the environmental impact assessment (EIA), the issuing of the nuclear licence as well as difficulties in securing funding, Engineering News reports.

However, speaking to delegates at the annual African Utility Week conference in Cape Town, Eskom senior manager for nuclear stakeholder management Tony Stott said that the state-owned power utility hoped to have clarity on whether it could move forward on this project by the end of this year.

A site near Oyster Bay is one possible location for the plant.

Eskom‘s Nuclear One project is anticipated to be a 3500MW pressure water reactor (PWR) that will be located on any one of five coastal sites in South Africa.
