Shamwari Game Reserve, has been named Africa’s Leading Conservation Company and Africa’s Leading Safari at the World Travel Awards.

Shamwari Game Reserve, was named Africa’s Leading Conservation Company and Africa’s Leading Safari at the World Travel Awards regional ceremony in Durban on Monday.

Hailed as “the Oscars of the Travel Industry” by the Wall Street Journal, the World Travel Awards are the travel industry’s most prestigious and comprehensive awards.

Dubai World Africa acquired a prime stake in the world-famous wildlife reserve in March this year in a multi-million dollar deal. “We are delighted to be part of the continuation of a proud tradition of providing the ultimate luxury big five African adventure in the context of a conservation effort coupled with responsible tourism,” said Dubai World Africa CEO James Wilson.

The Shamwari Game Reserve is situated in verdant bush along the Bushmans River, half way between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown.

Luxury accommodation is offered in six different lodges on this private game reserve.

Steeped in pioneer history, and dating back to the time when a multitude of game roamed wild and free, the 25000 hectare reserve boasts five eco-systems, thus enabling the support of many forms of plant, animal and bird life.

Dubai World chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said he believed that: “Growing tourism appeal and opportunities in Africa will serve to boost local economies and to grow both development and conservation projects.”

In South Africa, in addition to Shamwari, Dubai World owns the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Pearl Valley Golf Estates, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Jock Safari Lodge and Nkomazi Game Reserve.

Dubai World Africa also has tourism and hospitality investments in Mozambique, Comoros, Zanzibar, Djibouti, Rwanda and Morocco.
