The Eastern Cape-based Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) has created 4,405 jobs as of September this year – a 520% rise on the same period last year, the IDZ operator said
on Tuesday.
The recent intake of labour in the Coega IDZ brings the total number of construction jobs created since the Coega Project started to 19,940.
Coega Development Corporation spokesperson Ongama Mtimka said the number was likely to increase in the short to medium term as construction of infrastructure and factories gained momentum.
The Coega project is a multibillion-rand industrial development complex and deepwater port in Port Elizabeth. Some of the projects in the area include the construction of the R2.8 billion Coega Aluminum Smelter and a deepwater port called Port Ngqura.
