A fascination with the building process is the inspiration behind an award-winning photographer's depiction of Joburg's architectural transformation.

Angela Buckland walked visitors around Parkwood's David Krut Arts Gallery, showing her pictures of the construction of the Constitutional Court in Braamfontein and other recent city projects .

"I have deep respect for architecture because it can be visually interesting and because of how buildings are able to change," she said.

Buckland also focuses on the construction workers who erect buildings.

"I enjoy ... making a connection with the people who actually make it all happen."

What fascinates Buckland most is the building process, which "can be complex as it includes a vast number of people who do different functions".

"I have a lot of admiration for the work, as it can also be an unglamorous and tedious occupation," she said.

Managing editor of David Krut Publishing, Bronwyn Law-Viljoen, said the showing was a follow-up to Buckland's book, Light on a Hill: Building the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

"We hope that the portraits . .. would bring an appreciation of the [ historic] building and make a connection with the large structures and the normal people who construct them," she said. - Benjamin Moshatama
