Kelderhof Country Village, a R250-million farm-style living project by Gateway Property Developments is set on the well-known Faure-family wine farm, established in 1917 at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains

A new development, on a historically proclaimed winelands township, provides one of the last opportunities to own newly available land in the Somerset West/Stellenbosch area. Kelderhof Country Village, a R250-million farm-style living project by Gateway Property Developments is set on the well-known Faure-family wine farm, established in 1917 at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains that continues to produce award-winning cultivars. Situated immediately adjacent to historic Meerlust, it is half-an-hour from Cape Town.

Bradley Marsden and Adam Marcus, directors of Gateway Property Developments, say: “Kelderhof Country Village captures the true spirit of family-living in the country, set amongst an authentic working wine farm.”

DHK Architects have drawn on historic farm designs incorporating a contemporary feel capturing the ethos of country-style living. Driving the design is a desire to incorporate nature which they’re achieved through careful spatial use and features like wooden trellises that encourage vines to grow.

Central to Kelderhof Country Village is the Kelder Lifestyle Centre that includes a communal swimming pool, gym, entertainment amenities, tennis courts as well as the Kelder Private Wine Cellar, a safe haven for exclusive wines to be stored and importantly the Garagiste home wine-making facility. Residents will have the benefit of three generations of Faure-family viticulture to draw upon. The Kelderhof lifestyle is augmented by a central landscaped park featuring a duck pond and nearby picnic spot at the farm dam’s edge.

Aimed at people looking for homes in the Somerset West area as a primary residence, it also has strong appeal for up-country buyers looking for holiday/getaway residential properties in the Cape Winelands in close proximity to such well-known wine estates as Spier, Ken Forrester, Vergenoeght and Avontuur and award-winning restaurants.

Marcus and Marsden say: “there is a famous African proverb that states ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. This is precisely what we’re creating at Kelderhof - a village in the heart of the winelands.

Marise Potgieter, urban designer and director of DHK Urban Designs explains: “There are essentially four different house design types. Row houses set at the entrance to the estate with flat or pitched-roof variations; Barn houses, consisting of two barn buildings linked to create a house, with single and double-storey options; the Courtyard House, based on an L-shape design with provisions for a pool area in both single and double-storey options and a double-storey Cottage design is also available. Clever design has provided for private lanes for parking access so that the streetscapes are not punctuated by garages and carports.

With just over 400 plots that range between 250m² (row houses) and 1000m², the average freestanding erf is about 500m2 in size. Each includes DHK’s house sketches and guidelines.

Freestanding erven are priced from R555, 000.  Some have views of False Bay with the majority situated in the lie of the land offering glorious mountain views, vistas of the Helderberg and sweeping views across the vineyards. Cape Town city centre is a mere thirty minutes away, while Somerset West and Stellenbosch are close by. It’s a five-minute trip to the Mall and 10 minutes to the beach.

The developers say Kelderhof fits into the growing need for peaceful, better quality home life, while remaining in close proximity to centres of business, culture and recreation, in this case Somerset West, Stellenbosch and Cape Town. “We’re offering a life less complicated in the last proclaimed residential township in the winelands.
