Sapoa Moves Swiftly To Correct Inaccurate Media Reports About The Draft Proposal On Inclusive Housing
As the industry body for commercial and industrial property in South Africa, SAPOA is concerned to note that certain media are incorrectly claiming that the Draft Proposal on Inclusive Housing has been finalized by the national government without proper industry consultation.
The Draft Proposal assesses different policy approaches to mixed-income residential developments. “It has come to our attention that some media reports are suggesting that the draft proposal has been finalized and this is simply not the case,” explains SAPOA legal services manager Tsakane Shilubane.
SAPOA would like to set the record straight. SAPOA and the National Department of Housing have always had a consultative relationship. Two weeks ago, SAPOA was afforded the opportunity to comment on the draft proposal before it enters the formal legislative approval process.
SAPOA is currently soliciting comment and input from its developer members. “In the spirit of prior talks between SAPOA and government, government has given us the assurance that the industry will be consulted during the current process, in which the policy framework is being finalized prior to it being legislated,” says Tsakane “The point is that the draft proposal is exactly that – a draft housing policy paper. It is still very much open for discussion,” Tsakane adds.
