"This, among other ventures, includes joint endeavours focusing on the development of infrastructure and transport systems in the run up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup," said Shirona Patel.
A memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday by the two Johannesburg-based universities' vice-chancellors, Professor Loyiso Nongxa (Wits) and Professor Ihron Rensburg (UJ).
"The universities are actively working together on projects related to transforming Johannesburg into a world-class city, developing an efficient transportation system and upgrading infrastructure."
The institutions will join forces in other priority areas like education, engineering, languages, optometry and biotechnology.
Rensburg said universities should assist in promoting economic, social and cultural vitality in society.
"The two universities will also strive to strengthen their contribution to the economy, sports and arts and culture."
Nongxa said this collaboration showed that even the best universities in the world appreciated the importance of being part of creative and innovative intellectual networks.
The collaboration is the first in the history of the two universities.
