The Independent Democrats have called for an emergency sitting of the Cape Town council to clarify matters around the construction of the city's proposed 2010 World Cup stadium
The Independent Democrats (ID) have called for an emergency sitting of the Cape Town council to clarify matters around the construction of the city's proposed 2010 World Cup stadium.

"With an issue as important as this, we are talking about thousands of jobs and millions of rands in tourism revenue, it is critical to the future confidence in the city for council and the public to be fully briefed on what is going on," said ID spokesman Simon Grindrod.

"I have asked the speaker to convene an emergency sitting of the full council to ask that the mayor fully brief council on what is going on... what we have is total confusion."

The construction of the R2.9 billion stadium has been marred by controversy with the city and the provincial government blaming each other for delays in the building of the stadium.

Problems ensued when the Metropolitan Golf Club and the Green Point Common Association (GPCA) objected to the development of 67 hectares of the green area.

The new stadium and its sporting facilities are expected to take up to 18 hectares of the land. This, according to the golf club and the GPCA, was not necessary.

The matter was taken up with council, but provincial premier Ebrahim Rasool said the correct procedure was not followed by council and the matter would be referred to the provincial government for a decision.

But Cape Town mayor Helen Zille disputed the claims, saying council had approved the construction, on condition that provincial planning MEC Tasneem Essop granted the rezoning.

A final decision on circumstances surrounding the building of the stadium was expected to be taken early in January.
