According to Nedbank's capital expenditure project listing, which records every project valued at more than R20m, 78 new projects worth R147bn were announced in the first half.

The previous record (R200bn) was in 2004, dominated by the R150bn-plus for Eskom and Transnet's expansion.

So far this year, Telkom's R30bn investment in its next-generation network is the largest individual project, followed by Johannesburg's R14bn capex plan and the R11bn expansion at O R Tambo airport (Johannesburg International).

The private sector accounts for R103bn in projects so far this year and the public sector R44bn.
