Earthworks have begun for the new R600m office development at the northern end of the mixed-use Melrose Arch precinct in Johannesburg.

Called Offices on the Piazza, the development is to be built on the back of strong demand, says Melrose Arch Development Company director Nicholas Stopforth.

Diesel Power, which was awarded the R25m contract for the earthworks, is removing 20,0000m? of material for the office basement parking area.

Earthworks are expected to take four months to complete, after which the main contractor will move on to site to begin construction on the seven separate office buildings around the piazza. They are scheduled for completion by mid-2008 and will bring 30,000m? of new office space to Melrose Arch.

The new development was launched in April and leasing of the prime office space has begun.
