LEADING SHOPPING CENTRE DEVELOPER ANNOUNCES R1,8 BILLION SHOPPING NODE PLAN FOR EAST LONDON

And as if the competition wasn’t tough enough - a fourth developer, the  Atterbury Salinga Consortium has now joined the race to be the chosen one to tackle East London’s next big retail mall.  Atterbury  Property, one of the major shareholders in Attfund and the country’s leading property developer, today unveiled plans for the development of a 50 000m² regional mall that will form part of a mix use shopping node comprising 267 000m².

“The site of 117 ha is located on the major Gonubie/N2 interchange and has by far the best visibility and highway access of all the proposed sites in East London,” says Gerhardt Jooste, director Atterbury Holdings.  “One of the primary reasons for selecting this site is that the majority of the growth in the East London region converges at this intersection.  We have the only site that can provide a one stop shopping and entertainment experience. By tapping into future growth we won’t merely be splitting market share through the duplication of malls, but rather we will be creating new opportunities.”

“We want to rekindle a sense of community by means of a comprehensive self contained node of mix use status,” says Prince Sivile of Salinga.   “We intend creating a shopping lifestyle mall, value mart, large regional hospital, Class-A office blocks, a Home Fashion Street, a Motor City, a leading hotel as well as a residential estate.”

“Convenient parking and security at all our facilities within the new East Cape Boulevard goes without saying. A stream with amazing waterfalls and rapids will flow through the lower entertainment level, creating a shopping experience never experienced before in South Africa” says Jooste.  “In addition, a sculpture park with outdoor theme area and children’s playground adds further appeal to the idyllic lifestyle arrangement.”

“East Cape Boulevard will be the place where people can meet and greet and see and be seen.  It is convenient, accessible, comfortable and will offer a sense of ‘outing and pleasure’ with the added attractions,” says Jooste.

Attfund is an award winning property investment fund and is heralded as a national leader in the development of corporate office parks and shopping centres.   There is no doubt that this entity certainly has the necessary skill, experience and kudos in the realm of retail malls.

On the other hand Atterbury Property is undoubtedly the market leader in developing new malls around the country.  In the last 24 months the company has developed a variety of award winning malls.  Clearwater Mall received the SAPOA Best Mall 2005 Award whilst the Woodlands Mall was chosen runner-up in 2006.  Garden Route Mall, Cape Gate and a share in Centurion Lakes also form part of the Attfund portfolio.

Atterbury has announced that a further R1,7 billion will be invested in the Eastern Cape region. To promote local economic and social development, specific to the area, Atterbury will join forces with the Salinga Consortium of Buffalo City based businesses as well as local influential community leaders.

“With the East Cape Boulevard we will roll-out a totally integrated node development in line with our Attfund-Cape Gate Investment. No other proposal is able to offer retailers exposure on the N2; a unique entertainment package;  as well as all of this combined into a super commercial node five times larger than any other,” says Jooste.

“I grew up in the Eastern Cape and believe now is the time to ensure long term sustainable development that will benefit the communities. The Atterbury Foundation will raise R15m for the training of 2000 people over the next four years and will implement job creation programmes in conjunction with Call for Africa.”
