The Canal Walk Foundation is a first-of-a-kind corporate social investment programme

The recently launched Canal Walk Foundation is a proactive social project established by Canal Walk Shopping Centre in Cape Town. This is the first social investment foundation to be established by a shopping centre and this unique corporate social investment programme is already making a difference.

Explaining the motivation for this initiative, Canal Walk CEO Wayne Abegglen explains that addressing the complex issues of socio-economic development and empowerment by shopping centres required a shift in mindset.

“Canal Walk, as a landmark is constantly approached by a plethora of community and charity organisations with a diversity of needs. The establishment of the Canal Walk Foundation formalises our commitment to social responsibility while also providing a structure through which to facilitate a meaningful contribution,” says Abegglen.

The Canal Walk Foundation supports projects that contribute to the socio-economic development and empowerment of beneficiaries in areas such as education, health, job creation and the sponsorship of arts development programmes.

Abegglen explains that The Canal Walk Foundation brings private individuals, the corporate sector and social and community development initiatives together, forming public-private partnerships to address various social elements, most notably education and training.

The Canal Walk Foundation’s first beneficiary is Childline, for which the foundation raised funds during the presentation of the Canal Walk Magical Fairytale Theatre, reinforcing the centre’s message of ‘children for children’ which creates a platform for children to have fun while empowering other youngsters.

“The Canal Walk Foundation represents a proactive and interactive response to the emerging goals of society, the local community and Canal Walk’s corporate goals in light of its social responsibility contributions. We are confident that the Canal Walk Foundation will be able to add sustainable value to its recipients which will go beyond the direct contribution,” notes Abegglen.
