In another thumbs-up deal for the Durban CBD, Ackermans have opened a flagship mega store in West Street in a 7-year leasing transaction concluded by JHI Real Estate.

The 3547sqm store, one of the biggest in the country, also looks set to be one of the most successful according to Brett Exner, Pepkor/Ackermans regional property manager “The first weeks of trading have been outstanding and if these figures continue, the signs are that it will be one of the biggest turnover stores in the country,” adds Exner.

The store is located next to Woolworths in the heart of West Street in a building owned by Capital Property Fund and managed by JHI senior portfolio manager, Viren Mungal. “This type of position rarely becomes available and we immediately thought of Ackermans as the ideal tenant for the space,” says Mungal, who successfully negotiated the lease.

Ackermans have two other stores in the city but have been looking for significant space to establish a megastore, the first of its kind in KZN. Reports are that the consumer demand in the city is such that the new store has not impacted negatively on turnover in either of the other two existing stores.

Ackermans have a chain of 450 stores across the country including megastores which incorporate all three core brands of the group being ABC Baby, clothing and Home Comforts.

Mungal adds that the success of traders in the city continues to fuel demand from nationals and that JHI is constantly looking at creative ways to try to accommodate the never-ending flow of enquiries.
