Nine hundred or more international and local delegates are expected to attend the 38th annual convention of commercial property association Sapoa

Sapoa CEO Neil GopalSapoa CEO Neil Gopal says that the convention, at the International Convention Centre in Durban from May 17 to 19, will be slightly smaller than the one held in Sun City last year.

He says the highest number of delegates are attracted to the convention when it is held in Sun City as it is such a popular destination. But the intention is to grow the convention in the coming years.

The theme of this year's convention is "property geared for endurance", and it takes place at a time when property, both commercial and residential, is one of the most popular asset classes.

Gopal says the office, retail and industrial property markets have experienced "good returns", and the commercial sector is "definitely on an upward swing". Sapoa hopes returns will endure into the future.

Some of the interactive sessions at this year's convention include panel discussions on listed property, retail, property economics and design trends.

"We will also have a session on the property charter."

The property industry empowerment charter was signed in March and numerous deals are expected to be struck by property companies, both listed and unlisted, this year.

The convention will be officially opened by Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, who will give the keynote speech. Transport Minister Jeff Radebe will also deliver an address.

"We have local and international speakers. It's a good time for people to network and there are good business opportunities," says Gopal.

The CVs of the speakers can be found on Sapoa's website, www.sapoa.org.za.

He says there are 86 exhibition stands booked.

"This is not a final figure as people may still book," says Gopal.
