Canal Walk Shopping Centre excelled at the Footprint Marketing Awards 2005

Canal Walk Shopping Centre excelled at the Footprint Marketing Awards 2005 held at last week’s 10th African Congress of Shopping Centres in Cape Town.

Canal Walk Shopping Centre, owned by listed property company Hyprop Investments Limited (80%) and Ellerine Bros Pty (Ltd) (20%), scooped up an impressive five awards which were presented at the annual showcase of outstanding initiatives in retail marketing.

The super-regional Cape Town mall won gold for its Teddy Bear Factory which comprised part of Canal Walk Shopping Centre’s festive programme themed “Share the World of Christmas”. The Canal Walk Teddy Bear Factory allowed children to create their own teddy bear, either to keep or to give to a less privileged child in the spirit of sharing.

Embracing the principle of “children for children” The Teddy Bear Factory captured the hearts and minds of youngsters, with over 6,500 kids participating in the fun and educational activity. Canal Walk Shopping Centre presented over 1,000 teddy bears to children at Red Cross Hospital. Going beyond the needs of children, Canal Walk Shopping Centre created new skills and economic empowerment. The components used to create the bears were handmade by a group of unemployed adults participating in a local skills-training programme.

“For so many, the Canal Walk Teddy Bear Factory created a special Merry Christmas and it is wonderful that this achievement was recognised by the Footprint Awards judges,” said Canal Walk Shopping Centre CEO Wayne Abegglen.

Canal Walk Shopping Centre also claimed three silver awards for Spiderworld, Celebrity Rooms Competition and Celebrate Love. The Canal Walk Sale of the year earned a bronze award.
