The R110m expansion of Rustenburg's Waterfall Mall to 50,000m? is on schedule for the early phases to open by the end of the year.

Stephan le Roux, retail fund manager of Growthpoint Properties, says the expansion has introduced new retailers and provided additional space to meet the demand from national retail chains for larger footprints and more brands.

The expansion comes on the heels of successful retail trading in recent months, as the economy reflects boosted consumer income on the back of lower inflation and interest rates.

The move will bring 30 new shops to the centre, while expanding the floor space of nine existing ones. The development also includes construction of 220-bay underground parking garage.

Phase one, which included enlarging Edgars, was finished this year and opened in March. Five new stores were incorporated during that phase, including the Foschini Group's Due South and FX, Sneekers, Home Comforts and Pep.

Seven tenants took more floor space, including First National Bank, Absa, Total Sports, Shoeperama and Foschini.

The second phase is currently under way and is expected to open before the peak December trading period. The upgrading of the main entrance - incorporating a new food court - is also part of the development.

Retailers introduced to the Waterfall Mall tenant mix in this phase include the Cape Town Fish Market, Incredible Connection, Sheet Street, @Home and the Cape Union Mart. Existing tenants Milky Lane and Wimpy are expanding their floor space.
