The design of a new environmental education centre in the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve could be in the shape of a foot in recognition of the ancient human fossil footprint traces found near the site.
Planning for the R2,5 million facility is in the final stages. It will be built in the reserve near the Nahoon Reef parking area.
A conference area, museum display area and coffee shop will be under the same roof.
The design is aimed at attracting tourists while not being too intrusive on the landscape.
The project is being implemented by the Small Projects Foundation (SPF) and is funded by Buffalo City municipality, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism and the Swedish International Development Agency.
The design of the facility was undertaken by Imbono FJA Architects.
The SPF's André Olivier said the educational centre would serve as a point where learners and the public could meet to learn more about the coastal environment.
An environmental impact assessment study needed to be completed and the public would be welcome to air their views on the centre before the plans were approved.
