The first sods will be turned today at Liberty Properties' first major retail development in KwaZulu-Natal the R270m Liberty Midlands Mall in Maritzburg.

The centre, adjacent to the N3 highway in Chase Valley, will initially offer 38000m² of retail space, with the potential to grow in phases to 58000m².

Scheduled completion date for the first stage is September 2003. The principal building contract has been awarded to Wilson Bayly Holmes Ovcon.

There has been strong support from the business community, and more than 70% of the space has already been let. Anchor tenants are Pick 'n Pay, Woolworths, Game and Avalon Cinemas.

Jim McLean, MD of Liberty Properties, says the centre will grow 'in structured fashion' to meet consumer and retailer demand.

McLean says architect Bentel Abramson will ensure the mall reflects a look and feel appropriate to KwaZulu-Natal.

The 41ha site, incorporating the city's landmark former brickworks and quarry, will have excellent visibility from the highway. Roads will be improved, bridges widened and a new access ramp from the N3 built, along with a highway overpass. There will be free open parking.

McLean says the investment reinforces Liberty Properties' commitment to SA and its faith in the region.
