R10m to develop boutique hotel
Husband and wife Petra Onel-Smith and Giles Smith have just bought 1 Main Road, Green Point and they plan to spend R10 million converting it into a boutique hotel which will be called 1 on Main.

For many years now the address 1 on Main on the corner of Boundary Road and Main Road has been home to a three-storey backpackers' haven, Brown Sugarâ (so named when it still was brown - at the moment it is vivid purple).

The building currently has around 20 rooms, which will be converted by architect Megum Reyneke into 10 en suite rooms, eight of which will be standard and two family suites. There will be a full kitchen and dining room, lounge and bar leading out on to the terrace with pool.

There will also be a spa/beauty salon to pamper the guests. Petra and Giles live in Green Point, and have been running a company called GRS Southern African Tours.

Says Petra: "We have always wanted to go into the hotel industry since we felt that it would complement what we already do. We know what guests want, and we will be able to offer them a small, exclusive hotel."

They are aiming for completion in the first quarter of next year.

Says Seeff Atlantic Seaboard MD Ian Slot: "The hospitality industry is what changed De Waterkant - and this urban revival is kicking in in Green Point in a big way. 1 on Main is in the hub of the Waterfront to Green Point tourism corridor."
