BISHO - The Eastern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works isto engage a strategic partner to help it manage state-owned property inthe province.

This was announced by MEC Sam Kwelita last week.

Kwelita said the management of state-owned property, which had beenroundly criticised by the department's standing committee last year, wouldreceive the utmost attention during this financial year.

"We are currently undertaking a forensic investigation of all governmentleases so as to be able to establish those people who are unlawfully usinggovernment property."

Kwelita said the investigation would also enhance revenue collectioninitiatives aimed at bringing rentals of state-owned properties into linewith their market value.

Last year the standing committee, then chaired by Kwelita, found thatthe department had no adequate asset register or knowledge of who was rentingits properties.

However, Kwelita said his department was doing exceptionally well interms of project implementation, especially in the construction of schoolsand clinics.

He said the department was currently implementing 150 projects for theDepartment of Health, 310 projects for the Education Department, 11 projectsfor the Agriculture Department, five projects for Social Development, 14projects for Economic Affairs, Environment and Tourism and two for theDepartment of Transport.

The department would seek to advance the province's socio-economic objectivesthrough the upgrading of roads, especially those serving agriculture, tourism, industry and access to essential social services.

His department had vowed to improve its administration and managementsystems. - ECN
