INVESTMENT in central Cape Town has reached R3.4 billion in the last year, with cumulative figures since 2000 amounting to R12.5bn, says Andrew Boraine, chief executive of the Cape Town Partnership.
"These figures are testament to the fact that our central city is undergoing a positive wave of change, and that continued and growing private and public sector confidence is evident," said Boraine.
"There is a significant amount of interest in Cape Town from a range of international investors, particularly in our urban renewal process and what we have achieved. At the same time, domestic investment has remained constant at about 88%, which is a positive sign for Cape Town's economy."
Boraine was speaking after work began on the site of Harbouredge, a R160 million residential development near the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
"The Partnership welcomes the Harbouredge development as another example of the revitalisation of the central city. We are of the view that it will be the catalyst for further mixed-use developments in the Green Point area and beyond," he said.
Bordered by Buitengracht and Western Boulevard, Harbouredge is within walking distance from the commercial centre of Cape Town, the Convention Centre and the Waterfront, and convenient for the nightlife of Green Point.
The building, which will include shops, a restaurant and coffee bar as well as 81 apartments, was designed by dhk Architects.
The foyer will house a business centre and a lounge with a concierge. A gym, saunas, terrace and pool will be on the first floor. A few units are still available, having recently been released by the developer. Of the 81 apartments on seven floors (with two floors of retail below), 30 are bachelor units, 32 are two-bedroomed and 12 are three-bedroomed.
To top it all, there are seven duplex penthouses. In-house laundry services will be provided and all apartments will have specifically allocated parking bays in the basement. All apartments will be air-conditioned, and will have balconies. Shutters on the edge of the balconies will allow owners to control light as well as ensuring privacy.
The prices of the units just released range from R1.15m for the bachelor flats to R6m for a penthouse, including parking and transfer duty. Seeff's Ian Slot said: "Harbouredge is 200m from the Waterfront, but its apartments are less than half the price.
It has brilliant access to the Waterfront, retail, CBD and all amenities. Harbouredge merges elegant form, superior function and an A-list address. We are really excited about this development as part of the revitalisation and energising of Cape Town as a place to work, rest and play." l
