Sandton Square will be renamed "Nelson Mandela Square at Sandton City"
Sandton Square will be renamed "Nelson Mandela Square at Sandton City" when a 6m high bronze statue of the former state president is unveiled on March 31.

Sandton Square GM Gary Vipond said that the statue was being financed by "international donors" who wished to remain anonymous.

"The donors wanted to pay tribute to the great man and, after extensive research, they selected Sandton Square as their preferred site," said Vipond.

Sandton Square is one of the largest civic open spaces in South Africa and it has become an established and well-known local meeting place. It comprises over 100 upmarket shops, and there are another 295 in the adjacent Sandton City.

"If you visit Sandton Square on a warm summer evening, you will see the Rainbow Nation that Nelson Mandela fought to achieve," Vipond said.

"People of all races, backgrounds and ages mix comfortably and securely at restaurant tables or strolling and enjoying each other's company. It truly represents the new South Africa."

Direct benefits would accrue to the Nelson Mandela Foundation through donations and the sale of memorabilia, he added.

The statue's design was taken from a photograph of Mandela. It was moulded using computer graphics. Certain parts were manufactured overseas.
