South African construction company Ruthcon Civil Contractors has been awarded a contract to build infrastructure for a new township, Park Haven, in Kempton Park, Gauteng.
The work includes an outfall sewer 1,4 km in length and an average depth of 4 m.
Ruthcon contracts manager Mike Hancock, said the site has been particularly challenging.
"There’s a lot of rock and water underground and we’ve had to use an 88 l/s pump to remove the water during the construction. Then we must lay the pipe very quickly and backfill to prevent the water from filling up the trench," explained Hancock.
The contract also calls for a 650m x 250 mm diameter bulk connection water pipe, which will supply the water to the township.
Work started in November and Hancock says that they will be finished on time and within budget.
