GMI Property Group was established in 2012 by Gerald Dros and Mike Pfaff. After first gaining experience in residential property development, Dros moved into the commercial sector focusing on rural retail developments. The first shopping centre Mahwelereng opened its doors in March 2013, bringing, for the first time, shopping options to the surrounding communities. Thereafter, the portfolio grew exponentially over the next decade. The portfolio now consists of five existing centres and another four in the pipeline. Most of the centres are situated in Limpopo:

Fast earning the reputation as a dynamic and professional operation, Sky City Mall is GMI Property Developers largest project to date, currently at 13 000 square meters but with plans to expand to 40 000 square meters. Maokeng Mall is situated in the Free State town of Kroonstad. The latest addition is Mamaila Mall – a convenience centre of 12 500 square meters, anchored by Shoprite, Cashbuild and OBC in Mamaila in Hartbeesfontein within the Greater Letaba Local Municipality, and 46km from Elim.
