THE South Peninsula chapter of the Cape Regional Chamber of Commerce has put its weight behind the location of the proposed film studio at Capricorn Park, Muizenberg. The Capricorn Park venue - chosen by the iKapa Film Consortium - has been shortlisted as one of the three finalists by the Western Cape government's Ebrahim Rasool for the construction of the first film studio in South Africa. Jan van der Walt, chairman of South Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, told delegates at a briefing this week: "This is the ideal place for a film studio, we fully support it and can see it having significant long-term benefits for South Africa". He said the film industry was booming and the time was right for development, especially at Capricorn. "Capricorn Business and Technology Park was conceived and designed to create a strong 'clean' industry growth point in the south of the city. "Capricorn is a world-class modern industrial park with a full service infrastructure that lends itself perfectly to the development of a facility such as that proposed by iKapa," said Van der Walt. The development of a film precinct in Muizenberg would establish a springboard for job creation and inject new life into the region, fuelling positive economic growth in the South Peninsula. The iKapa consortium, made up of South Africa's most renowned film producers and empowerment partners, presented their vision to the chamber this week. The project - pitched as a globally competitive film hub - will house film office parks, stages, education and training centre, services and facilities for the film industry as well as a drive-in cinema, retro-style roadhouse eatery and a residential aspect. Muizenberg has already hosted many international film crews and was transformed earlier this year into a movie set. Its scenic beauty, authenticity and quiet, rustic character make it an ideal home for the film industry. The Capricorn site is fully serviced and has underground hi-tech wiring to the latest global standards. It provides an award-winning landscaped environment, which offers fantastic views, indigenous landscaped and terraced terrain and an internal lake. It also offers gated 24-hour security and convenient access only 30 minutes from the city. Capricorn also has the correct zoning which would streamline all the necessary town planning approvals, and allow construction to commence soon after approval. This will prevent delays and help get "the show on the road" as quickly as possible.
