THIS year's annual safety competition got off to a flying start as the Master Builders and Allied Trades Association (MBA) Western Cape began inspecting the 64 participating building sites. The competition, which is divided into 16 categories, is judged in accordance with the Safety Act of 1993. It encompasses all aspects of safety ranging from equipment, warning signs to educational material for employees and safety committees. "The main aim of the competition is to educate employees, employers and the public on building safety issues," said Noel Maart, the MBA's safety advisor. "The noted decrease in accidents on construction and building sites of MBA members over the past few years is a direct result of the event." Rob Johnson, executive director of the MBA Western Cape, said: "Safety is just one of the areas in which the MBA assists its members with the support and encouragement that they require to subscribe to our slogan, 'Build With the Best'." "The competition gives employers the opportunity to enhance their credibility within the building industry while adhering to the high standards set by the association."
