A NEW Estate Agency Affairs Board, intended to reflect the concerns and interests of all South Africans, has been announced by Trade and Industry Minister Alec Erwin.
For the first time, the real estate consumer protection body was approved by a full cabinet meeting a move that ensured both race and gender equality were addressed. No members of the previous board were appointed to the new board, which has widespread provincial representation. There are more women than men on the board.
The board's CE, Stanley Moshidi, said the new members would make a great contribution towards ensuring the industry remained healthy and "respectful" of consumer interests.
"A talented board comprising members of proven honesty, integrity and capability has been appointed," he said. "We are satisfied they will ensure the meaningful transformation of the real estate industry."
The long delay in finalising the board was caused by the need to get cabinet approval of the appointments.
Moshidi said the checks and balances the board enforces guarantee consumers protection from "unscrupulous and incompetent operators".
Training of estate agents would be one of its priorities. The board will seek to encourage young graduates to make a career in real estate and to raise the level of professionalism in one of SA's fastestgrowing industries.
The new members of the board are: Geoffrey Mashigo, a director of the Institute of Estate Agents; estate agent trainer and chair of the Institute of Realtors of SA, Jill Corfield; estate agent Valencia Mazibuko, who is also a member of the Eastern Cape Consumer Tribunal; Anne Fry, a branch manager for Pam Golding Properties; Mandisa Sinuka, deputy chairwoman of the ANC Women's League and executive director of Mandisa Estate Agency; consumer rights activist Lillbeth Moolman; Zena Poggenpoel, legal manager at the Housing Consumer Protection Trust; Mohamed Ismael, accountant and executive member of Dundee metro council; architect Ian Cruickshank; Phethola Makgathe, a member of the Unisa council and the regulatory body monitoring the building industry; and Magauta Mphahlele, the representative from the trade and industry department.
