The quiet Bedford Centre turned into a blood bath following the alleged attempted robbery of the cash-in-transit, at the secluded mall just after mid-morning.
An unidentified number of alleged robbers are said to have entered the mall and a shootout followed between the robbers and security guards. Seven people, including two alleged robbers and two security guards were believed to be injured in a shootout, Gauteng police said.
"Three customers, two security guards and two suspects were injured during the shooting. All have been taken to hospital," said spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale.
It is believed that security guards were collecting cash inside the centre when they were confronted by a group of armed men, she said.
Johannesburg Police are still searching for suspects in connection with the shooting following images of men wearing blue overalls being spotted walking away from the mall.
Firearms were also seized on the scene by the police and investigations are ongoing.
A R500 000 reward has been offered by the cash-in-transit company whose employees were robbed at the Bedford Centre in Johannesburg, the company said on Friday. "SBV Services is offering a R500 000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and successful prosecution of the suspects," the company said in a statement.
