Sapoa's Gold Spiral Award for developmental excellence is open to any private or public property development that embodies the concepts of aesthetics and architecture, financial viability and functionality, and contributes to the high standard of southern African property development.

The Green Spiral Award is made to the property development or system that contributes most to the development or upliftment of society or the environment.

RMB Properties' Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, designed by Build Architects, has raised the bar in shopping centre conceptualisation and development, say the judges.

Its team refurbished and repositioned a dated centre not only by doubling its size but also by providing an avant-garde shopping experience, improving access and including entertainment to create a fresh design.

Westlake Estates, owned by Westlake Building Developers and developed by Rabie Property Projects and Cavcor Property Group, won the Green Spiral Award with its home-grown solution to a worldwide problem of slums and landfills.

Five years ago it was stateowned land, overgrown and home to 700 squatter families. The developers have created a mixed-use estate that incorporates business and residential components, with a light industrial and business park section.

Its residential components range from multimillion-rand homes to two- and three-bedroom houses that are part of a social housing project.
