Liberty Properties’ section of Southdale Shopping Centre is undergoing a R23,5m refurbishment scheduled to be completed towards the end of June this year.

Adele van Staden, of JHI Real Estate, who is handling the letting of space in the revamped section of the centre on behalf of Liberty Properties, says the O.K. Bazaars section is being converted into one enlarged compact mall in terms of the renovation and reconfiguration.

“This section of the shopping centre has been closed to receive a complete facelift and refurbishment with high quality finishes and will in future accommodate major tenants such as Pick n Pay, Clicks, Mica, Baby Boom and Wimpy. Pick ‘n Pay, which will occupy 3 000sqm, will be the anchor tenant in this revamped 7 000sqm wing of Southdale.”

The designers for the centre’s refurbishment are RFB Consulting Architects.

Van Staden said the existing 22 000sqm part of Southdale – which houses the major banks as well as Shoprite, Woolworths, Mr Price, Truworths, and Pep Stores – continues to draw shoppers from both suburban residents and the large population of office workers in the Ormonde area.

Occupation of the revamped section of the complex - which boasts a 65% national tenancy - will start in June 2003 with the official opening at the end of June 2003.

“There has been tremendous interest from the retail sector and most of the lettable space has already been taken up,” Van Staden said.
