TELKOM will demonstrate its new T-Mall online shop-front service at the Faire, which will allow small businesses to promote and sell their goods and services on the internet with minimum complexity and risk.

As the first stage of this service, Telkom is launching a facility whereby entrepreneurs can be allocated a web page in a predetermined format of an extended business card.

"Before entrepreneurs start trading on the internet they need to get a feel for the demand for the products and services they intend to provide on the web," says Theo van Zyl, senior manager of e-commerce solutions at Telkom.

The company and contact details, logo and slogan, and a brief description of the products or services on offer can be included on the web page.

The page will be linked to a search engine, so that if an online shopper is looking for something specific, such as a carved chessboard or fresh fruit and vegetables, the headers of all the business cards that contain related information will be presented.

If the small business already has a website, the address can also be included, and clickthrough links can be provided.

Initially, the business card service will be free in order to create a demand for the service, which in the longer term will attract both buyers and sellers to the store-fronts.

"We will provide a basic storefront targeted at small businesses with products or services for which a demand has already been established through the business-card listing."

Having tested the market, businesses will be able to showcase their products in a catalogue, including photographs of the items on offer.
