Helping local learners, teachers and schools rise above the textbook crisis, Mall of the North has found an innovative way to inspire learning in the province

Sumari de RidderMall of the North is sharing Kahn Academy tutorials on Maths and Science. The Khan Academy is a non-profit organisation which provides a free online library of over 3,300 videos covering various subjects. It aims to provide a world-class education over the Internet, for anyone anywhere.

While these tutorials are free to download from the Internet, few Limpopo learners have the Internet access or the bandwidth to watch them.

Mall of the North is making the Maths and Science video tutorials available on DVD so even local learners without Internet can benefit from these tutorials.

The community project was launched in early August. Mitchell House, Mall of the North’s neighbouring school, is the first to receive the tutorial DVDs. The videos are on the school’s computer network, giving all learners access to the tutorials through its computer room.

This is only the beginning,” says Mall of the North General Manager, Sumari de Ridder. “We’ll take this initiative to other schools, spreading it as far across the province as possible.

She stresses that any school that wishes to be part of this initiative should contact Mall of the North management on 015 265 1026 or email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

De Ridder adds that, by putting tutorials on DVD, learners can watch the videos as many times as needed to understand the tutorials. “They can even help study groups.”

“This isn’t going to solve the textbook crisis nor does it replace textbooks in our classrooms. But, we hope that this small initiative can be a big help to schools, teachers and learners throughout Limpopo. They are all doing their best under less-than-ideal circumstances. We want to help too.”
