The Mall of Rosebank has experienced a consistent increase in activity since the conclusion of a R56m refurbishment programme a year ago.

Mall manager JHI Real Estate says the centre's foot traffic exceeded 900000 in December, while parking for the last quarter showed a 45% increase on that of the previous comparable quarter.

It is a pity the pavement cafés, which came with the refurbishment and are considered critical to the new image may be removed because of a legal wrangling between the mall and the neighbouring Cradock Heights building.

The London-based owner of Cradock Heights, Stephen le Roith, has won a court order to have the mall's new entrance and the pavement café area demolished because they encroach on public space.

JHI has appealed against the court ruling.

JHI national retail director Ivan Pachonick says many tenants at the mall are showing increases in excess of 20%, and one national retailer has more than doubled its turnover.

Mark Souries, Old Mutual Properties' Rosebank centre manager, says there has been an improvement in trading activities, and it has been apparent in four areas: foot count, parking, income and vacancies.

TheZone@Rosebank has reduced vacancies to 1,7%.

Mutual Square, which used to house popular pub Picasso, recorded nine deals in the past six months, while two deals are pending.
