The super-regional shopping centre’s landmark expansion and refurbishment project – which involves interior refurbishments and the total expansion of 30,000sqm of new retail space - is set to further strengthen the centre’s position as one of Africa’s leading retail icons.
“The commencement of construction of the new parking deck is indicative of the excellent progress which is being made as the vision to reposition Sandton City unfolds into this incredible and shopper-friendly structure,” says Julie Hillary, General Manager Sandton Region, for Liberty Properties. “The completion of the first phase is scheduled for November 2011 meaning that in six months time shoppers will be able share and enjoys the enhanced Sandton City shopping experience in full.”
The roof parking will be closed to the public to ensure the speedy construction of the structure. In the interim, shoppers can park in the substantial existing underground parking which will service the needs of shoppers. The new parking decks will introduce an additional 1417 parking places for Sandton City shoppers when the extension opens in November 2011.
The new Sandton City extension will provide space for the expansion of national retailers, the introduction of the latest-specification national flagship and concept stores and the opportunity for local and international department store fashion labels to operate from their own branded outlets. Leasing is currently underway.
“Sandton City’s entire retail space, including the extension, will total 143,690sqm on completion of this phase. This will take the complex, which includes the hotel and office component, to a massive 215,000sqm,” notes Hillary.
In terms of the refurbishment which is underway in the existing centre, bringing it to the same meticulous standards of its modern extension, the Fountain Court is currently under refurbishment. Work on the Mugg & Bean court is set to commence in mid 2011.
