As thousands of South Africans gear up to participate in Earth Hour 2011, Joburg’s iconic landmark Sandton City Shopping Centre will show its support of this environmental initiative for the third consecutive year

Sandton City Shopping Centre will join various businesses, organizations and individuals around the world in supporting Earth Hour on Saturday, 26 March. South Africa’s premier shopping destination will show its commitment to the global World Wildlife Fund (WWF) initiative by switching off its tower cap from 8:30pm until 9:30pm.

“Sandton City has pledged support to Earth Hour this year with the hope that we can further encourage South Africans to address the problem that is climate change,” says Sharon Swain – Sandton City & Nelson Mandela Square Centre Manager. “With South Africa hosting the COP17 climate change conference this year, our support of Earth Hour as a nation will prove invaluable in raising awareness of this environmental challenge globally.”

In 2010, hundreds of millions of people in thousands of cities throughout the world participated in Earth Hour. Some of the world’s most famous man-made marvels and natural wonders, including Table Mountain, the Eiffel Tower, the Great Pyramids of Egypt, Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer statue, the Empire State Building and many more global icons stood in darkness as a powerful symbol of landmark environmental action.
