Gauteng motorists are to pay more toll fees, with provincial government adding more roads.
Yesterday, Premier Nomvula Mokonyane confirmed three more roads would be tolled in the R20 billion road tolling project.
"Not all roads in Gauteng will be tolled, there are three roads that will be tolled as phase two.
"The entire idea around tolling is not new. It has been implemented around the country," she said in response to a DA question in the Gauteng legislature.
It is understood that the second phase will cover 300km and start next year.
Mokonyane's announcement comes amid a public uproar about the tolling of several highways which was to start in June. She said a task team has been established and "consultation is taking place to look at the affordability for road users".
The ANC yesterday denied it had objected to the tolling system because it was campaigning for local government elections.
"The proposals as they exist are not unacceptable because they will have severe consequences for the people and economy of Gauteng," ANC provincial secretary David Makhura said.
