MOSCOW - The head of the Russian state company building arenas for the 2014 Winter Olympics has resigned, the latest management change at the top of the ambitious Kremlin-backed project, an official said on Monday.
At the helm of Olympstroi since 2009, Taimuraz Bolloyev submitted a letter of resignation blaming poor health, a government official familiar with the situation said.
If his resignation is accepted, he will become the third company head to leave the post.
"He's leaving due to ill health. The workload is gigantic," said the government official, requesting anonymity ahead of an official announcement. He did not say who will replace the 57-year-old Bolloyev.
Spokespersons for Olympstroi declined immediate comment.
Bolloyev's predecessors were Semyon Vainshtok and Viktor Kolodyzhnyi.
The Black Sea resort of Sochi won the right to host the Games after a bid championed by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
But the country's ambitions have long been dogged by concerns about whether the city will be able to build infrastructure needed for the event.
The suicide bombing at Moscow's Domodedovo airport that killed 35 last week has aroused fresh concerns over the country's ability to handle the big-ticket event near its violence-ridden North Caucasus region.
