Both wholesale and retail trade sales dropped in real terms over the three months to January 2010

Wholesale trade sales, at constant 2000 prices, for the three months ended January 2010 decreased by 10,7% compared with the three months ended January 2009, while growth for the same period in 2009 was 2,0%. Seasonally adjusted wholesale trade sales for the three months ended January 2010 increased by 1,0% compared with the three months ended October 2009.

Wholesale trade sales, at constant 2000 prices, for January 2010 decreased by 11,2% compared with January 2009.

Wholesale trade sales, at current prices, for the three months ended January 2010 decreased by 10,2% compared with the three months ended January 2009. The major contributors to this decrease were dealers in machinery, equipment and supplies (-20,4% and contributing -3,9 percentage points) and dealers in solid, liquid and gaseous fuels and related products (-19,1% and contributing -3,6 percentage points).

Wholesale trade sales, at current prices, for January 2010 decreased by 8,8% compared with January 2009, while sales for the corresponding period in 2009 increased by 5,3%.

Retail trade sales in real terms
 
Retail trade sales, at constant (2008) prices, for the three months ended January 2010 reflected a decrease of 4,1% compared with the three months ended January 2009, while sales for the corresponding period in 2009 decreased by 0,4%.

The main contributors to the decrease of 4,1% for the three months ended January 2010 compared with the three months ended January 2009 were all other retailers (-10,3% and contributing -1,4 percentage points), general dealers (-3,2% and contributing -1,2 percentage points) and retailers in hardware, paint and glass (-15,8% and contributing -1,1 percentage points).

Retail trade sales, at constant (2008) prices, for January 2010 reflected a decrease of 1,7% compared with January 2009.

Retail trade sales, at current prices, for the three months ended January 2010 compared with the three months ended January 2009 increased by 2,9%. The main contributor to this increase was general dealers (6,2% and contributing 2,3 percentage points).

Retail trade sales, at current prices, for January 2010 increased by 4,7% compared with January 2009, while sales for the corresponding period in 2009 increased by 12,4%.
