PORT ELIZABETH Port Elizabeth's biggest shopping complex, the 60000m² Greenacres Mall in Newton Park, is set for a R68m facelift and expansion due to demand for more space from existing and potential new tenants.
The project, starting next month and due for completion by November, will include a three-storey
parking arcade, upgrading the road network around the centre, a 5000m² extension and retiling of
the mall.
Liberty Properties director Eric Bernstein says the extension has been on the cards for five years
as a result of pent-up demand for space in the centre.
Negotiations are taking place with several new tenants, while some existing tenants will be
expanding.
Other high-end national shopping centres owned by the Liberty Group include Sandton City, Sandton
Square, Alberton City and Eastgate in Johannesburg, and the Promenade in Nelspruit.
Greenacres owner Liberty Group, in an equal partnership with the Mine Officials and Employment
Pension Fund, has awarded the contractor's tender for the extension to Johannesburg company Abcon.
The awarding of the tender to a Gauteng-based firm has caused unhappiness in the Port Elizabeth
building industry, which is going through a lean patch. But Bernstein says he feels that builders
need not be concerned because most of the work will be outsourced to local contractors and
suppliers.
