The KZN Chapter of SAPOA held its annual gala dinner last Thursday, 11 November at the Hilton Hotel in Durban, which was sponsored by Nedbank Corporate Property Finance

Sapoa CEO Neil GopalIn his sponsor’s address Anand Joseph, Nedbank Corporate Property Finance’s Regional Executive for KZN, focused on the growth of role players within the industry:  “Nedbank Corporate Property Finance thanks its clients and staff for their ongoing support that allows them to sponsor various SAPOA events, which are much needed in growing various stakeholders in this industry."

Also in attendance at the dinner were Neil Gopal, SAPOA CEO, who outlined the 2009 initiatives that SAPOA had undertaken, which included focus on education and the continual drive and commitment to boost the intellectual knowledge and practical skills within the industry, and Miles Taylor, SAPOA KZN Chairman.  In his address, Taylor commented that the South African property industry had witnessed one of the most trying years to date.  “However, despite that, we have been largely insulated from the full ravages of the global banking and credit crisis, largely due to the effect of the National Credit Act and exchange control regulations, which prevented large scale off-shore speculative actions.

We are also beginning to see some recovery, particularly in the home loan lending space which is one of the first indicators of stress in the economy.”

From a SAPOA KZN perspective, he commented that the mission going forward for the Regional Council would be to drive awareness around energy efficiencies, green building principles and environmentally sustainable initiatives.  “We have been able to engage with a number of industry stakeholders around the implementation of a Development Forum, which we hope will drive this initiative further to ensure that our membership base within KZN is able to participate in the broader decision-making process around developmental issues.”

An important part of the evening’s formalities was the announcement of the SAPOA KZN Property Award and SAPOA KZN Student Awards.  The SAPOA KZN Property Awards are now in their third year.   Whilst SAPOA makes national awards for developments of excellence at its annual convention, the SAPOA KZN Regional Council also acknowledges developments within the region, which have regional impetus.  The broad criteria adopted for these awards include:

-World class development
-Quick delivery
-Ground breaking or iconic design
-Development, which provides “seed” capital for the future, more specifically for the region.

Other criteria also considered:
-Acknowledgement of building contractors
-Green building principles
-Life cycle costing

The 2009 SAPOA KZN Property Award was made to Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) for the King Shaka International Airport at La Mercy.

SAPOA KZN has also over the past three years made awards to students from KZN-based educational institutions that have excelled in their course of study, applied themselves consistently from an academic perspective and who have demonstrated a passion for property.  The awards do not take the form of a bursary, but of an honorarium for excellence.  It is intended that the amounts awarded to each student be used towards paying off a student loan or towards fees or other costs for further studies.

2009 Records the highest number of motivations for the award received to date, all of whom were deserving, with some of the best calibre of students to date.  The following awards were made:

Ziningi Mkhize of DUT, who is in her final year of her National Diploma in Town and Regional Planning.  She articulated a desire to study further, but would require financial assistance.   An amount of R6 000-00 was made available to her.

Boitumelo Moshoeshoe of DUT, who is completing her National Diploma in Town and Regional Planning and who aspires to complete her BTech in Town and Regional Planning in 2010.     An amount of R12 000-00 was made available to her.

Stacie Moorhead of UKZN who is completing her Property Development Degree, but who wishes to complete her BSc Honours in Quantity Surveying in 2010.   An amount of R12 000-00 was made available to her.
