THE NEW Buffalo City metropole is set to boom, according to Peter Miles, chief executive officer of the East London Industrial Development Zone. Miles has been involved in discussions with up-country motor manufacturers to use the expanded port facilities for the import and export of
vehicles and components. "There are exciting prospects already on line," he says. The city of East
London forms the core of the Buffalo City metropolitan area. The driving force behind renewed
economic activity in the city is the export of right-hand-drive Mercedes Benz C class cars which
are assembled in the city by DaimlerChrysler South Africa. According to the National Association
of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), Mercedes Benz exports from South Africa have
increased by three thousand per cent over the last year. By March 2001, the company had exported
3 626 vehicles. Over the same period last year exports were 117. Exports by Port Elizabeth-based
Delta Motor Corporation are 273 per cent up over the same period - from 15 to 56 units.
