A BOOMING local economy has led to a shortage of both office and retail space in the East London central business district, according to a study commissioned by the Border-Kei Chamber of Business.
An area of around 20 city blocks between Fleet and North streets, and from Station to Buffalo
streets, has just four vacant retail shops available, which is insignificant, according to Gwyn
Bassingthwaighte, who is compiling the report. No large amount of office space is available in the
CBD even though there are some smaller areas available for offices and suites, but no reasonable
square meterage of space is vacant, she says. "There is no major office space available in the
CBD and precious little A-grade office accommodation in the East London area," she says.
