Prominent heritage landmark Orlando Power Station will once again be energized as it is transformed into ’Isango@Orlando eKhaya’ mall.

Sowetan online spoke to Siyabonga Mbanjwa of Crowie Projects who is involved with the refurbishment of the power station as it takes on its new lease of life as a shopping and entertainment centre.

"Soweto rates as one of the most popular tourist attractions in South Africa along with the likes of Cape Town and the Kruger Park.

"We want to create an authentic African experience in Soweto where visitors can not only shop but also dine and be entertained," said Mbanjwa.

"We are targeting exclusive retail outlets but also hope to secure some health and fitness as well as medical facilities for the mall," said Mbanjwa.

He further explained that office space will be available in the future but it is not part of their immediate plans.

Phase one of the project which involves the retail space only is expected to cost approximately R500 million.

"Last year we were granted town planning as well as heritage approval.

"This was a major milestone for the project," said Mbanjwa.

He added: "We have already secured retail tenants for about 60% of the available space and are aggressively seeking occupants to fill the balance."

"We expect to commence works once we have secured 70-80% occupancy of the premises.

For those worried about parking - over 1 000 bays will be available and the mall will also be easily accessible through the use of public transport.

The Orlando Power Station project is just one of many active developments in the recently proclaimed Orlando eKhaya area.
