Golf and sports celebrities are teeing off today at the Oubaai Golf Resort near George to raise funds for the country‘s first Golf Hall of Fame (Ghof) museum, which opens at the resort in March.
Retief Goosen, Sally Little, David Frost and sportsmen such as Springbok lock and Blue Bulls captain Victor Matfield will be joined by 76 other golfers in the all-day fundraising event, ending with a charity auction.
Ghof honorary CEO Barry Cohen said Southern Africa had so far contributed 24 majors and eight senior majors to the world of golf.
“The museum project will safeguard the rich and diverse history of golf in Southern Africa, and will also recognise golf personalities and achievers who were denied acknowledgment during the apartheid and colonial eras. It also has the potential to inspire people to play golf, contribute to tourism and create jobs.”
According to Cohen, the project has been endorsed by most golfing organisations and the George and Eden municipalities. Golfers Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, David Frost, Sally Little and Nick Price have agreed to provide memorabilia and act as ambassadors for the museum.
The museum opens on March 21 and will form part of Oubaai‘s new 100-bed Hyatt hotel complex. An inaugural induction ceremony will take place on March 27 where 25 living and deceased Southern African golfers will be honoured for their outstanding contribution to the sport.
