The contract, to extend Edgars at Gateway, has been awarded to Grinaker-LTA, a division of the JSE-listed Aveng Group, by long-standing client Old Mutual Investments Group – Property Investments.

Since completing the original construction of the Gateway Theatre of Shopping seven years ago, Grinaker-LTA has revisited the centre several times. Subsequent projects have included a R35-million contract for a new Virgin Active gym, as well as a R163-million contract to extend Gateway by 13 000 m2 and add a new four-storey parkade to the shopping centre.

The firm’s latest undertaking there is due for completion in April 2009, and will see the Edgars store extended by 4 000 m2. A total of 923 m3 of concrete will be used in the project, together with 73 tons of reinforcing steel and 282 000 bricks.
