The centre is already 70% let. “The response from retailers has been overwhelming,” says leasing expert, Mark Berman, from Sound Rock Property Consultants.
The centre will have two full service anchor tenants, consisting of Shoprite and Spar. Other tenants will include Cashbuild, a Post Office, Jet, Ackermans, Pep, Identity, Truworths, Exact, Fashion Express, Legit, Mr Price, Foschini, Markhams, Total Sport, Capitec, FNB, Nedbank, KFC, Nandos, Spur and Ellerines.
Bringing a local flavour to the development, is local business man, Mzoli Ngcauzele, owner of amongst others the famous “Mzolis” butchery and restaurant. “I am proud to see my dream of 10 years becoming a reality. We are building a centre for the community, involving them every step of the way,” says Mzoli.
When asked how he feels about the centre that is being built in Gugulethu, Local Councilor, Elias Maboee had the following to say “I am happy, I am so happy! It is an exciting thing that is happening in Gugulethu. I remember when the Deputy President said in a speech that she sees Gugulethu growing into a suburb one day, and I believe that day is here. The shopping centre will add to the aesthetics of the area and I am convinced that people outside Gugulethu will want to come and see it as well. My last hope is that it will create jobs for the community and help eliminate the high poverty in the area.”
There will also be significant benefits for the local community. Not only will the project be creating much needed jobs, it will also add value by offering them a convenient shopping experience.
Gugulethu Square will also be introducing exciting new retailers to the region. This will create a broader-based retail, restaurant and entertainment offering in the area, ensuring valuable consumer spend being retained in the area.
The launch date has been set towards the end of 2009.
