The prestigious awards took place during the 2017 SAPOA Convention Dinner and Awards Evening at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Thursday, 22 June. This marks the third consecutive year that a development in Waterfall received the Best Industrial Development Award from the South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA).
The super-regional Mall of Africa was the winner in the Best Retail Development category. Attacq holds an 80% interest and regards the Mall of Africa as one of the most valuable assets in its property portfolio. The Mall of Africa opened its doors to the public on 28 April 2016. It is South Africa’s biggest single-phase mall development and regarded as the anchor development in Waterfall City. In its first year of trading, the mall has performed significantly above expectations, as the trading densities were R2 630 per square meter.
“We are delighted by the fact that the Mall of Africa is being recognised as an iconic super regional shopping mall, catering for significant footfall, making it attractive to top international brands, national and other quality tenants. The 131 000 m2 mall, with its more than 300 retail outlets and restaurants, attracts leading retail brands and shoppers alike. We are also proud of our retail tenant list and value the opportunity to partner with them to build business value,” says Morné Wilken the Chief Executive Officer of Attacq.
Amrod’s Head Office that comprises 38 000 m² of cutting-edge clean industrial space, was the winner in the Best Industrial Development category. In January 2017, Amrod, South Africa’s leading importer and brander of corporate and promotional clothing, gifts and headwear, consolidated their three current buildings into one truly world-class building that is located in the Waterfall Commercial District. “Corporate consolidation, to a central and easy accessible location, such as Waterfall in Gauteng, enables large organisations to gain efficiencies in their business operations and reduce their costs,” Wilken states.
Wilken, however, emphasises that Attacq’s goal at Waterfall is more than the development of impressive stand-alone buildings. “We want to build a world-class city that works. Some of the world’s leading brands, including BMW, PwC, Deloitte, Cummins, Hilti, Novartis and Dräger have already moved to, or have recently decided to consolidate their businesses in Waterfall,” says Wilken.
The SAPOA Innovative Excellence in Property Development Awards recognise and applaud property professionals who undertake massive projects that result in globally competitive property developments. The awards, which celebrate exceptional design quality, green building, originality and efficiency in the commercial, industrial, residential and other property spaces – showcase some of the country’s most prestigious property developments and refurbishments.
Previous winners in Attacq’s diverse property portfolio, include Westcon (2015) and Hilti (2016).
